Frequently Asked Questions...
How Do I Book?
You can obtain your tickets in advance of your journey, and this must be on the day of travel as they are pre-dated; the office is open from 9.00am throughout the day, though the station master will be busy attending to his duties as the trains approach, so we recommend purchasing tickets fifteen minutes or so prior to departure to allow for this.
How Much Is Car Parking?
The car park at the station is exclusively for railway patrons and is free of charge, though on a first come first served basis; the area outside the station between the public houses is a disc zone, these can be obtained in the waiting room. The car park closes each evening after the passing of the final two trains of the day, so check which timetable is in place.
How Do I Get In Touch?
The station can be contacted by telephone in working hours and the number is +44 (0) 1624 822275; you can contact us via our Facebook Page with enquiries and the postal address is Castletown Station, Station Road, Castletown, Isle Of Man, IM9 2EJ. In usual hours the office is manned, though staff may be outside attending to various other duties.
Can I Leave My Luggage
If you wish to leave your luggage and enjoy your day on the railway, the office has limited space to accommodate this, please ask the station master; luggage will be attended and safe, and when the office is not manned it is secured. This service is offered subject to space and is free of charge to our customers. The station closes after the final two trains of the day...
Can Wheelchairs Access Trains?
Please see out Accessibility Page for details on this matter, we can usually accommodate wheelchairs on the trains, all of which carry ramps for this purpose; the station also has sets of portable steps which can be used to aid access onto and off the trains, please enquire with the station master who will be happy to assist wherever possible.
Can I Leave My Purchases?
Should you wish to purchase larger items from our gift shop and not carry them round all day, these can be paid for and left behind the counter for later collection; the office is manned until after the final trains of the day and you can call in to collect them when you arrive back at the station following your excursion. There are larger shops with more range at Douglas and Port Erin.
How Do I Access Poulsom Park?
The park is accessed via a set of steps which start from the platform behind a safety barrier; for sloped access for prams and pushchairs, there is a sloped access gate which is located beyond the water tower at the northern end of the site, a flat entrance is also located off Alexandra Road which is a short walk from the station on the main road.
Can I Reserve My Seating?
Seating is first come first served and each compartment accommodates eight passengers; there are some double and triple compartments with open backs as well; it is not possible to reserve seating unless the group is over twenty persons, and this must be arranged via the office staff who can be contacted via e-mail on enquiries@rail.im
Can I Access The Goods Shed?
As a matter of course the shed is not open to the public for health and safety reasons; it usually contains only stored items and no locomotives or rolling stock; an enquiry with the station master may enable access to the building but only if it is safe to do so. The doors are occasionally open when work is being carried out, please do not enter should this be the case.
Can I Get Involved With The Friends Of...?
The volunteer group always welcome new members and enquiries can be made with the station master, or one of the volunteers directly should they happen to be on site; you would need to complete a Personal Track Safety (P.T.S.) course to be a volunteer and these can be arranged with the railway upon request; please contact us for this.
Do You Accept Donations?
The railway is operated by the government with paid staff, but the Friends Of... volunteer group can accept donations. Our projects always need funding, and donations of period signs, luggage and items for the model railway exhibition are always welcome too. You can contact us via the Facebook Page with your feedback.
Who Runs The Model Railway?
The volunteer group tend to this and its operation is dependent on volunteer availability; generally the display is open for viewing on operational days, though it may not always be running for a variety of reasons; an enquiry with the volunteers may see it possible to run the model if it is not already doing so, please ask!
