“Yard Stars” At Castletown : Wickham No.23
Wickham Railcar No.8849 (Fleet No.23) was built in 1961 by Wickham of Ware was scheduled to be shuttling between services at Castletown Station around the loop on both sides of the station platforms but unforunatley in the evnet owing to ignition issues this was not possible and unit was displayed at Douglas Station. The railway operated timetable “S” plus the evening “U” service offering a rare opportunity to travel on a night service train.
2009 saw the first of these week-long extravaganzas across all island railways, which continue to this day; extra trains, headboards, double headers, evening trains, social events and open days are features and the 2024 event also hosted the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary ceremony for the station with the unveiling of a blue commemorative plaque by the Friends Of... group. These images show some of the festival highlights including No.5 Mona displayed at the station, anniversary workings, double headers, travelling post offices and recreation trains. The festival takes place around the end of July each year.
