The Station Triskelion
The Station Triskelion
The concrete-cast Three Legs of Mann (or “triskelion”) at the station stands in front of the goods shed on the down platform and was installed here in the spring of 1980; prior to this it had been a feature on the embankment at Peel Road Station on the old Ramsey Line.
When this site was cleared in 1975 following the closure of that line some seven years previously, the triskelion was carefully removed by Railway Company staff and stored before being installed at is present location at the same time as the raised lawn was added to the down platform.
Originally featuring a circular concrete surround which was found to be broken, irrepairable and not retained (the image below shows the feature prior to being removed from Peel Road in its original condition and curiously running in the opposite direction).
Today, the triskelion is tended to regularly by the Friends Of... volunteers and regularly repainted and decorative gravel replenished, the colour scheme has varied over the years, presently yellow, red and black. Another small detail that makes the station unique along the remaining south line.
On the bank at Peel Road Station on the north line where it was removed from to be relocated, showing the original concrete surround. In this location it was opposite the platform face - though curiously the legs are flipped!
The triskelion in 2019 during renovation works when weeds and grass were all removed in preparation for a ground sheet and decorative gravel being replaced showing the tri-tone colour scheme it still retains, redone in 2025.
For a period from 2011 the triskelion appeared in an all-over gold scheme which was found to not retain its lustre for very long and so the decision was made to revert to the more familiar red, yellow and black.
Shortly after a refurbishment by Friends Of... volunteers in the spring of 2018, complemented by period platform furniture which has since been repainted into a more cheerful and historically accurate shade of green as have many other features around the historic site including lamp standards and litter bins.
