Going Green In 2025
Going Green In 2025
A Change Of Shade
Based on historical photographs and some investigations on the site, it has become apparent over time that historically the station has largely carried a green paint scheme throughout its existence over one hundred and fifty years. There are notable exceptions to this, after the government took over the railway in 1978 a pale blue scheme was used for some time, replaced for a short period by bright red before reverting to the traditional green from 1989.
The shade of green used has been one seen widely across the government owned railways, named Holly Bush, but this is somewhat deeper and more dull than the historical shade and is found to not weather terribly well. And so, in 2025 the decision was taken to alter the shade used to somethimg more historically in keeping with the heritage of the station and based on previous coats of paint discovered in preparation for repaints. The result is a more cheerful shade of green (RAL6002).
Devil In The Detail
Much of the ground level painting was carried out by volunteers on non-running days in October 2025, leaving the next task, to apply the cream detailing on all these items, including ironwork on the benches, lettering on the litter bins and accenting on the plant pots among other items, work will continue on this as weather and resources allow so that by the start of the 2026 work will largely be completed. It is hoped also to tackle the large doors on the goods shed at some point as well as all the window frames and door aptertures.
The railway also plan to replace some of the time-expired picket fencing over the winter months, meaning that the entire site will be looking extremely smart for the start of next year's trains. It is understood this fencing may be in plastic which may somewhat lose the historical charm of the site, but we withhold judgement until this is erected! All signs and advert board will shortly be removed and overhauled over the winter to be put back up once all these works are done. - working parties are regularly on site, please call us +44 (0) 7624 480461 if you can help in our voluntary activities.
A Large Task!
There are many items around the site which all match the scheme, and so the volunteers have had their work cut out in altering this hue, and in October 2025 work commenced on this task with sanding down and preparing surfaces and ordering of replacement lettering, so much part of the character of the whole site. Punctuation of paintwork is achieved with items picked out in cream, a task which requires great patience to apply, but the end results are certainly worth the effort.
All the platform benches were so treated, there are ten of these in various designs and states of repair; there are also a total of nineteen concrete planters around the site which have been similarly treated as well as downspouts, litter bins, luggage trolleys, signage and many other smaller pieces which are to be treated to this new shade of green. It is the ultimate intention that the main building also be painted to match the rest of the site, pending volunteer manpower and accessibility.
