Modern Water Tower
Modern Water Tower
Erected to service of locomotives in the summer of 2001 in advance of the following year when short line workings for the I.R.I.S. Scheme saw the station serve as temporary terminus, this structure was constructed of steel bar holding the tank atop it with integral metal steps for ease of access; these were removed upon deterioration in the summer of 2023 and to date have yet to be replaced. The entire tank is due for replacement in the early part of 2026 being time expired, a new one being of similar construction.
The new tank was erected for short line workings in 2001 and remained in situ long after this was the case, surviving until 2026 when a replica of the same design took its place on the same location.
No.12 Hutchinson using the tank with veteran driver James Maddrell in charge during one of the Blow Away The Cobwebs trains operated between Christmas and New Year between 2009 and 2012.
Intended initially as temporary, when the line was reinstated fully in 2004 the tank remained and now sees regular use when the evening dining trains call at the station regularly; in poor condition, in early 2025 additional props were added as support, and it is the ultimate intention to replicate the original in stone, as seen since 1998 at Port Erin Station where the original had been demolished in 1986. It is in poor condition and due for replacement prior to commencement of services for the 2027 season, a replacement being to the same design.
The facility being used by No.12 Hutchinson on festive dining duties with the white vehicular access gate to Poulsom Park visible to the rear; this was replaced with a more in-keeping timber gate in early 2026.
In addition to use by steam locomotives, the tank also sees use in replenishing the dedicated fire train operated in drier spells of weather, as seen here as Wickham No.22 performs this duty with its dedicated trailer and tank.
