Booking Hall & Office
Booking Hall & Office
Constructed as one large room which encompassed the office of the station master and a parcels counter with modesty screen between the two, what now houses the booking hall is largley in original condition, the gift shop taking over one half from 2017 and being done in a way totally unsympathetic with the historic structure, which is a registered building in a conservation area.
Little changed over the years, the major works of 1993-1994 seeing a new suspended floor added, the fireplace boarded over and a partition wall splitting the room in two to create a public area. Friends Of... volunteers removed part of the modern wall in 2010 to recreate the original layout, retaining part to mimick the modesry screen; they also installed a replica working fireplace and more suitable floor covering as well as many historical wall hangings and smaller period features remaining today. For a spell and "N" gauge model railway was displayed in the bay window.
2017 saw the gift shop being installed resulting in the appearance today, half historical and half modern panelling which has a rather jarring effect in the context of the other features around the site. The rear access door forms public access to the shop, which appears to open when some staff are on site...
