Waiting Room
Waiting Room
Forming the central portion of the 1874 building, the waiting room today is in the care of the Friends Of... volunteer group who most recently reedecorated it a cost of £1,300.00 in the summer of 2026. It was restored as part of the extensive works carried out on the site in 1993-1994 having latterly been used as a permanent way store and not used by the public for many years.
It was constructed as a "general waiting room", the portion of the structure which now forms the toilets having originally been designated for ladies only with a connecting door between the two. Access was via the rear of the building (blocked off to form a window in 1994) or the doorway which remains under the shelter. A large window faces the platform area.
Equipped with an open fire and seating, little is known of the original internal layout, this is one of the "holes" in our archive at the present time, though it is believed to have been more basic that what is provided today. The fireplace was restored in 1994 though it was not until 2010 that the fire was lit, once the Friends Of had reinstated the long covered over chimney.
Today it is the jewel in the crown of the volunteer group having undergone several updates and repaints in the last two decades, the most recent of which has seen a considerable update of the framed displays and wall hangings, work which is always ongoing. It is home to our popular visitors book as well as much historical information about the station and the railway.
